Writing

Struggling with character development

Has anyone else struggled with getting their characters to feel more developed and real? I feel like I had such a clear sense of who this character was supposed to be but now that I’m writing, the character feels like a placeholder without any real backstory or lived experience

I had the same issue with a short story I was working on a while ago. For me, the solution was to let the character tell me who they were, I stopped going into the writing process with a defined sense of who the character was supposed to be and instead let them surprise me if that makes any sense. It takes a lot of patience, and its scary, but I found so helpful to not force the character to be a certain way just because I went into the project with an idea in my head.
